📝 Publication: Former student worker Wei-Chien Kao's first-author paper, Artificial intelligence–based detection of small and intermediate-to-large lymphocytes for cytologic diagnosis of canine lymphoma, is out in Veterinary Pathology — a YOLOv11 model trained on smartphone photomicrographs of canine lymph node aspirates that correctly inferred the diagnosis in all 14 test aspirates.
👩🏫 Upcoming: Dr. Chu teaches the afternoon session on vibe-coding tools at the AI Jumpstart Bootcamp, run by the Texas A&M Institute of Data Science with High Performance Research Computing.
✈️ Committee: Dr. Chu attended the fall in-person meeting of the AVMA Task Force on Emerging Technologies and Innovation, working on AI literacy resources, a framework for ethical AI use in veterinary practice, continuing education, and collaboration with academic researchers.
📝 Publication: PhD student Yumi Chang's first paper, Applying artificial intelligence to automate clinical data extraction from veterinary electronic health records, is out in the Veterinary Pathology special issue on artificial intelligence — open access.
🎤 Invited talk: Less pAIn, More gAIn: A Starter Guide to AI Literacy for Veterinary Professionals at the AVMA Convention 2026 in Anaheim, hosted by IDEXX.
✈️ Workshop: Dr. Chu and Dr. Mary Nabity delivered a two-day workshop on cytology, urinalysis and renal biomarkers for the Taiwan Academy of Veterinary Internal Medicine, attended by more than 200 veterinarians.
🎤 Presentation: PhD student Yumi Chang gave an oral presentation at the ACVIM Forum on extracting clinical data from medical records, in collaboration with VetRec and the Dog Aging Project.
📚 Textbook: Dr. Chu contributed to an AI literacy textbook for veterinary medicine, to be published by Springer Nature.
📝 Publication: Computer Vision and Deep Learning in Small Animal Cytology and Slide Review — an invited review in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice covering computer vision fundamentals, publication guidelines, and how nine veterinary organizations address AI in their position statements.
📣 Recruiting: The lab is offering fully funded, salaried two-year MS-thesis positions for DVM students interested in applying AI to veterinary medicine. See Team for how to apply.
📝 Publication: Curriculum framework for artificial intelligence literacy in veterinary education is out in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, with PhD student Avery Huang as first author.
✈️ Conference: Dr. Chu is heading to the Purina Institute Global Summit 2025 to present "The impact of AI on veterinary diagnostics and consulting."
🎉 Dr. Chu has been appointed to join the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges AI Working Group to advance veterinary medicine!
✈️ Conference: Dr. Chu is heading to the VMX 2025 Veterinary Conference to teach hematology and talk about AI.
